Raku pottery is one of the most natural pottery techniques in the world, dating back to the early 1550s. All of nature’s elements are used in raku firing – earth, fire, air, and water. Did you know that incense was the first form of perfume? The word ‘perfume’ literally means ‘through smoke,’ and our ancestors used incense to scent their bodies. Ancient Egyptians and Romans would ‘perfume’ the air with the incense they burned. They believed that the sacred smoke of incense would raise all surrounding vibrations and assist them in their magical practice.
Raku is a type of low-firing process similar to Japanese pottery firing. In western-style raku, the pottery is removed from the kiln while it’s at its hottest and placed into a container with combustible material.
