These natural Zion sandstone altar plates were formed over 225 million years ago by mineral-filled waters that slowly filtered the compacted sediment layers. Iron oxide, calcium carbonate, and silica served as cementing agents, transforming layers into stone over extended periods of time, and creating the exquisite lines and markings you see on these mini-monuments. It is truly remarkable to think that the Zion sandstone started out as ancient sand dunes, shallow ocean bottoms, and swamp lands.
