The Power of New Year Intentions

We set goals, thematic words, and good intentions at the start of the brand new year. Based on the Wheel of the Year, Samhain was the Celtic new year, and most magical practitioners set new year intentions over candles, stones and oils during the darkness of the Shadow Season on November 1. For us, this is the real “start” of the year ahead.

Whether intentions are set on November 1 or New Year’s Eve, we set them with a surge of vitality that emerges as we imagine the many ways we can better ourselves. We hold them closely and diligently for weeks afterward. However, after a few months, most of those intentions fall by the wayside. As time goes on, our patience dwindles and the promises we’ve made to ourselves and the universe start fading. Do you find yourself setting the same goals year after year and not quite seeing them to an end? How can you create intentions you’ll actually stick with? How can you ensure your success?

A good place to start is by understanding the power behind intentions. Intention is not just a thing you set on one special night when the sky is dark and your universal order form is ready to be completed; intention is not a box you check off. Rather, intention is a living and breathing process that fuels growth, creation, and manifestation. Intention is that tiny breath of hope, that tiny dream living within you that, no matter the evidence and proof to the contrary, continues to gestate within you like a fetus struggling to nest, grow, and thrive.

Sumerians believed that just naming something can breathe it into existence. Your words truly have the power to manifest your wishes. Long after you’re gone, your words and the energy you put behind your intentions have the power to become immortal when they manifest into tangible form. When you give your intentions a name and tell the universe “now is the time” the universe will honor those intentions. When you honor the promise you send out to the universe, you will be rewarded with more blessings.

Knowing this power, it is also wise to tread lightly when speaking words of intention. Remember… if you’ve manifested it, you wished and asked for it at some time. Think of what you truly wish to happen with love, generosity, and a spark of hope. Can you imagine the possibilities you are capable of creating? Being in an intimate relationship with the universe in that way? Your relationship with the universe is much like the relationships you keep with others – it’s all about giving and receiving; it’s about keeping the promises you make with each other. When you honor the promises you make to the universe, the universe reciprocates.

What can you do differently this year? If you’re expecting a specific answer, you’re going to be disappointed. I don’t have a one-size-fits-all plan for you. Part of the power in setting intentions comes from personalizing them and claiming them as yours. Invest in your interests: Enroll in programs or classes, buy tools – like intention candles – to help you carry out your intentions, purchase a plane ticket to a dream destination, or put your unique energy into a project and watch it grow. Whichever intention you choose to set, make sure it’s your own. No one can tell you what you want – only you can do that. Understanding your desires is the first step to manifesting your dreams.

Below are some practical steps for setting intentions to manifest your dreams:

1) Purify your space by smudging with white sage, palo santo, or other cleansing herbs. Gems such as obsidian, smoky quartz, shungite, and kyanite are also powerful clearing tools.

2) Envision what you wish to manifest and hold that image in your mind and heart.

3) Don’t worry about all the little details and exactly how to bring your creation to life. Everything will come together later with ease when you keep your focus on the intention.

4) Write your intention down and draw it out. Writing engages your logical left brain and drawing activates your creative and intuitive right brain. Using your whole brain is powerful!

5) Imagine your dream or intention as though it were happening right now.

6) Visualize your intention in a balloon and send it up to Source.

7) Believe. Leave no room for doubt.

And so it is.

Bright blessings for 2019!
