Roman glass is truly unique and has been preserved for centuries. It’s no longer manufactured, so there’s only a limited quantity available worldwide. Roman glass was made with sand, nitrate, and a massive amount of heat – a process that was much harder to achieve in ancient Roman times than it is today. To give the glass its distinct color, glassmakers would add various metal oxides, such as potassium or magnesium, to each piece, resulting in a different hue. This glass was widely used throughout the Roman Empire, appearing in vases, mosaic tiles, bottles, and other items.
