The magic of rosemary essential oil
Rosemary has a long, dynamic history of magical and ceremonial uses, and as a medicinal and cleansing agent. The time-honored tradition of laying sprigs of rosemary across the coffin or upon a tombstone dates back to ancient Egypt. This custom continued well into the medieval period and beyond. For instance, Shakespeare’s Juliet was bestowed with rosemary upon her untimely death. In Australia, where Anzac Day is celebrated in remembrance of familial ancestors, it is customary to wear sprigs of rosemary. Scholars of ancient Greece wore wreaths of rosemary about the brow to help improve recall. Rosemary is traditional wedding herb used to grace the bride’s bouquet, headpiece, and dress. It was also once common to add rosemary to the couple’s wine to reinforce their sacred vows. It is an old folkloric tradition for a bride and groom to plant rosemary near the marital threshold on their day of matrimony for protection and stability.
Rosemary was used dispel negativity during the Middle Ages. Rosemary was tucked under a pillow to prevent nightmares and unwanted visits from spirits. A nod to its cleansing essence, rosemary was burned in the house to keep the black plague from entering. This association with protection is why rosemary is still used as an ingredient in incense used to cleanse sacred spaces. A Spanish legend tells of a Mediterranean woman who took refuge beneath a rosemary bush to shelter herself and her young son as they fled from Egypt to escape Herod. In honor of this woman, the plant came to be known as Rose of Mary, which was eventually shortened to the familiar name we use today. The aromatic quality of rosemary encourages mental expansion, clarity and profound insight. Its grounding essence helps us to embrace sudden change and transitions of all kinds. Rosemary is a general heal-it-all, and can be used topically to help soothe cuts & scrapes. Use rosemary oil in your hair to make it strong and shiny. And of course, rosemary can be used in traditional smudge methods to dispel negative energy.
