Our Lady of Lourdes reportedly appeared to a fourteen year old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous on February 11, 1858. The young girl reported that a lady spoke to her from within a cave, wearing a rosary and a blue belt around her waist, just like in this statue. After several repeat visits, the lady asked her to dig and drink the water from the spring she had just dug up. Many reports surfaced that the spring had curative powers, and to this day the site remains a popular destination for spiritual seekers.
