If pyrite is your stone, if it calls to you, you need to buy one of these iridescent pyrite suns immediately. These are endangered specimens. Pyrite suns are one of the scarcest and most captivating varieties of this iron sulfide mineral. They’ve been a spectacle that has baffled mineralogists for years, and it is still in debate how these gorgeous, naturally compressed pieces have come to exist.
They are mined from only one specific place in the world: Sparta, Illinois. Today, only one mine remains open in Sparta, which has resulted in the diminishing excavation of these treasures. Soon, they will be extremely difficult to come by. These incredibly rare and precious gems formed by being embedded in the narrow seams between 300-million-year-old coal deposits. Subterranean pressure compressed the mineral into laterally formed discs, with luminous striations radiating out from the center like golden sunbeams.
I got this stock at last year’s Denver Gem Show, from a man known in the gem world as the “Sun King” because he is the owner of this last standing mine. I literally bought every single piece he had. Some pyrite suns acquire a natural iridescence due to certain heat conditions – the iridescent shimmer of the pieces I’m offering here is man-made through an applied treatment. They are far more affordable this way, but no less magical.
