Budai was different from all of the other monks because he could often be found laughing and smiling. He spent his life spreading joy to those around him, and was famous for going from one town to another, handing out sweets and toys to children as he blessed them with his contagious laughter. He filled everyone with merriment and constantly reminded those around him to be happy and enjoy life, which is how he got his nickname “Happy Buddha”.
