He succeeded only by using a shield to reflect Medusa’s own gaze back at her as he beheaded her with a sword. Perseus went on to give Medusa’s head to goddess Athena, to keep on her shield to avert evil. Today, Medusa’s head is still known as a symbol of otherworldly energetic protection.
