The deeper magic of my Fibonacci canvas and ammonite duo
It’s incredible to think that 400 million year-old mollusks once lived in these now fossilized shells we call ammonite. They are the only remaining earthly imprints of an extinct creature. It’s like having the ancient history of planet Earth sitting in the palm of your hand.
Ammonite, once thought to be the petrified remains of snakes, is actually the remains of ancient aquatic mollusks, or shellfish. The soft bodies of the mollusks were protected by a hard outer shell. Each shell was divided into many different chambers, called septa. These chambers increased in size as they grew next to each other and their sizes – remarkably and magically – increased in direct correlation to what is known as the Fibonacci sequence. Who knew Mother Nature was such an elegant mathematician?
What is the Fibonacci sequence?
The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where every new number is the sum of the previous two numbers. The Fibonacci sequence starts at 1 and grows infinitely:
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55… and so on, and so on.
The Fibonacci sequence has many strange and amazing properties. For instance, if you assign each number a building block, and start at 1 and work your way down, the blocks will form a perfect pyramid. A pyramid complete with a double top, (1,1) the very top block of which could easily represent the spaceship that landed and taught the Egyptians how to build the pyramids in the first place, or possibly even built them for them.
The sequence also appears unexpectedly often in nature. In addition to our well-known spirals, it can be seen in the way leaves grow on plant stems, the way tree branches grow on trees, in the fruit sprouts of a pineapple, the way an artichoke grows, and in the arrangement of a pine cone’s bracts.
And of course, ammonite shells, like the spiral so artistically depicted on your 10″ x 12″ canvas, as well as the specimen included in your duo, are a naturally occurring example of the Fibonacci sequence.
If you express the Fibonacci sequence as a series of squares, the first square would be 1×1, the second square 1×1, the third 2×2, the fourth 3×3, the fifth 5×5, the sixth 8×8, and so on. And if you then draw a quarter circle in each Fibonacci square, they will connect to form an ever increasing spiral, just like in the ammonite fossils. Remarkable, isn’t it?
