I can’t help but fall in love with these Dia de los Muertos skulls and what they represent. I love autumnal rituals from all cultures that pay tribute to souls who have passed on. Autumn represents the dark phase of the Great Wheel. Across the world, when summer ends and trees begin their descent into slumber and rejuvenation, allowing the leaves to cover the barren fields, people honor those who have passed from the earthly plane. These are beautiful, powerful, and sacred traditions, that turn the expression of grief into a celebration of a person’s life.
Día de los Muertos is one of my favorite holidays in these traditions. Day of the Dead is an ancient, sacred holiday celebrated in Mexico as well as throughout the Americas and in Spain. Traditional celebrations of this occasion are colorful and festive, and focus on edifying altars for loved ones who have departed this Earth. The making of the ofrenda – or altar – is a vital part of the Day of the Dead traditions, because each altar is designed for an individual person no longer living, and serves to welcome them to the altar. The ofrenda has inspired my Dia de los Muertos skulls, authentically crafted, hand-painted, and decorated, for placing on ofrendas.
