In Pagan and Wiccan tradition, names are given to each full moon, similarly to the naming of the full moons in Native American traditions. In both Wiccan and Paganism the customary name for December’s full moon is the Cold Moon. It is also known in Native American tradition as the Long Night’s Moon, because it signifies the time when the nights are the longest and coldest of the year. While this time is felt in the physical drop of the thermometer, so too does the time of reflection and sacred darkness reach its peak.
I created this Cold Moon Candle to honor the stillness and clarity revealed in the darkness of this month. It is a time to turn inward and remember what truly matters to you. To realign your life from a heart-centered place. I envision a single candle’s flame lighting the depth of these long nights, and illuminating the wisdom she holds. This is the magic of the Cold Moon. The power to expand the clarity only possible after dark, so you may befriend your shadow and carry yourself, healed and whole, into the new year.
Use this candle in your magical work to embrace your own soul’s hibernation. Drop into the deep wisdom of this moon’s essence, and call in the knowledge of what you need to focus on in the coming year, and in turn, what you need to release. Let this moonlight reveal what has fallen cold. What has drawn on too long. Light this candle and let yourself lay down all you wish to leave behind and seal in time with the passing of 2015.
This candle is made with rolled sheets of black, grey and silver beeswax, anointed with my Full Moon perfume blend, and sprinkled with pieces of moonstone throughout the wax.
Light this candle during your December moon rituals to welcome the stillness in your soul.
Blessings of Cold Moon magic,
Athena
