Achieving Inner Peace During Holidays

All seasons and all parts of nature’s cycles have wisdom to share with us. That simple and yet profound connection with the elements makes a world of difference. Winter’s wisdom is one of personal hibernation when our spirits draw inward and our bodies long for rest. A time to restore our Life Force, and honor the sacred stillness within. As Mother Earth revels in sweet slumber, she invites you to rest beside her and find your inner peace.

“Peace is always beautiful.” Walt Whitman

Around Christmas time, “Peace on Earth” is a phrase you see everywhere – department stores, commercials, church banners, and Christmas cards. Where is that peace? How are we supposed to find it? How can we fill the world with peace? True peace comes from within. When we let go of expectations and learn to love one another just as we are, we find that sense of calm we all need. When we find our happiness and learn to love ourselves, we not only love our friends but our enemies as well. When this kind of love permeates through each and everyone, the world knows peace.

Christmas is the time when we pay attention to these values. It’s a time to celebrate the relationships we have and express our gratitude for one another – a time to quiet the chaos of our minds and enjoy the present. Christmas is the one time of year where we make an effort to live in harmony with each other; when we care about the happiness of others more than ourselves. It’s a time to put aside our differences with friends and family, and create peace within and without. When we find our deep, inner peace, we find a connection to our spirituality and to each other.

Much like the Justice card in the Tarot, true peace is all about balance. It’s about thinking with intention before making choices. To achieve peace, we must adjust ourselves to do what we discern is right in all areas of life.

If you’re into astrology, think of Venus. Venus rules our feminine nature which is receptive, creative, and magnetic. She also rules relationships, resources including money, values, essential needs, harmony, cooperation, beauty, and reciprocity. How do you receive yourself?
How do you receive others?
How do you express your love for others?

Peace starts with you. If you’re looking for peace outside of yourself, you will never find it. It’s like the oxygen mask demo during a flight; it seems selfish to care for yourself at first, but if you don’t save yourself, you won’t be able to help others. Peace and happiness work in the same way. Christmas time can be stressful – constantly dealing with families and expectations and the general chaos of the holidays. If you don’t put that oxygen mask on, you won’t be able to breathe.

Five ways to achieve inner peace this holiday season 🕊️

1) Find what makes your spirit happy

True peace already exists within us. To invoke the stillness and quiet from within, listen to music that touches your soul, practice mindfulness by putting intention behind everything you do, quiet your mind and meditate – even if it’s only for 5 minutes each morning! When you do, you’ll begin to discern messages about your health and wellness and you’ll also find deeper peace. If quieting your mind is hard for you, try lighting a candle and just focus on the flame for 5 minutes. You’ll quickly find yourself softening into a relaxed state when you place your undivided attention on the flame.

2) Love with an open heart

Love is in the details. Without overwhelming yourself, think about which details you can attend to this holiday that will make a difference in your experience of the month. Home decor? Special meals? Pretty invitations to a small dinner party? Jewelry for a special occasion? Hosting a cookie swap or gift exchange with a unique theme? Try to find three ways – around your home or in your relationships – to delight in the details because in those details, love resides. Give items you’re no longer using to those who can benefit from them now. Love with an open heart.

3) Relax

Seriously, chill out. Winter is winter for a reason. This is the season of rest. On the medicine wheel, winter is in the North. We were meant to retreat and unwind this month. Spring and summer are the months of activity and creation and movement. Many of us fail to rest in the winter as nature intended and find ourselves out of sync with the seasons for the rest of the year. Enjoy a bath with candles, bath bombs, music, and champagne! Tend to your external and internal peace. What works for you?

4) Go home

Home is where your soul rests. So many of us get teary-eyed when we hear the song, “I’ll be home for Christmas” because no matter where we are, and where home is, we want to be with those we love most at the holidays. The definition of home may have changed for you over the years, but where your soul rests is really where home is. Give yourself the gift of going home this year. Ask yourself what that would require, and do it.

5) Give the gift of yourself

The best gifts are free. What are gifts after all without love, attention, and presence? Don’t sacrifice presence for presents this year. Show up for the moments of your life this season and lead by example for others around you. What words and actions do your loved ones need from you right now? Offer those first before material gifts and your holidays will be brighter for it.

In closing

Christmas is magic because it’s a time of the year when our spirits glow with peace and happiness. Always remember that your love and happiness will not only nourish and support you, but everyone around you. May you find and bring tranquility, comfort, wholeness, and healing this holiday season.
