Color magic 101

In the magical arts, we study the sacred correspondences or connections between colors, numbers, days of the week, signs of the zodiac, phases of the moon and many other mundane facets of life that to others seem unrelated. To us, magic is the intentional use and layering of these correspondences in order to harness energy for a purpose. It’s really as simple – and as complex – as that. I’ll admit – those of us who have practiced magic for decades make it look easy. And it’s not. We carry encyclopedias of information around in our heads, rarely keeping or leaving notes. Real magicians, priestesses, practitioners are lifelong students and there is no substitute for the diligence and discipline of the process. Magic looks simple because after a lifetime what you see is second nature to us. Magic isn’t just what we do, it’s how we live.

One aspect of magic I practice on a daily basis is color magic, the process of using color intentionally to raise vibrations of sacred items and spaces. When I craft intention candles, like the ones you see photographed, I’m working with a client’s intention and aligning that intention with a color, which has a vibrational value, a set of properties, a chakra correspondence, a directional correspondence, etc. For easy reference I’ve given a simple overview of the magic of the ROYGBIV rainbow of chakra colors, though the colors outside this spectrum (white, brown, black and the shades of colors in between like teal) have their own magic and important properties as well.

RED – ROOT CHAKRA – DIRECTION OF SOUTH – ELEMENT OF FIRE
Red is the color of passion and depth of feeling. It represents blood, the life force, menses, creation and also destruction, fire, and in its darker shades, death. It is the full cycle of being.

ORANGE – SACRAL CHAKRA
Orange is the color of sexual energy and creativity, the womb and all that awaits creation in this lifetime. It represents flow, movement, and flux as well as transformation.

YELLOW – SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA – DIRECTION OF EAST – ELEMENT OF AIR
Yellow is the color of power, authority, and control. It is the color by which we map our destinies and locate our space in the world. Yellow is the diaphragm, the great breath, and the light of dawn that represents possibility, becoming, and potential.

GREEN – HEART CHAKRA
Green is our heartspace, our capacity for healing in love and emotional matters. It represents our capacity to hold ourselves and others and represents hope.

BLUE – THROAT CHAKRA
Blue is our voice, our integrity, our truth. Is represents our ability to communicate and our willingness to articulate our desires, intentions, and needs. Blue is peace, the deep exhale that releases oxygen from our bodies. It aligns and balances us.

INDIGO – THIRD EYE CHAKRA
Indigo is the color of the priest or priestess, the knowing, the sacred eye that sees all and knows all from a place of ancient wisdom. Indigo opens us to worlds we have seen in our dreams but have yet to explore. It is our place of meditation, relaxation, and union with our guides.

PURPLE – CROWN CHAKRA
Purple is the crown of the divine, our connection so Source energy and All That Is. Purple reminds us that we are souls having a physical experience. Purple is our regal, Higher Self that is in alignment with Spirit.

I hope this brief introduction to color magic sparks YOUR interest in correspondences and connections so that you come to see the interrelatedness of all things for yourself.
And so it is.
